7 Reasons Why You Should Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Did you spend all of 2024 inside your comfort zone? Stepping outside of your comfort zone is a MUST. Here are seven reasons why, and how dance can help you do it!

1.Achieve Personal Growth – One of the six fundamental human needs we all need to fulfil at some level is growth. The only difference between high achievers and the rest is they spend more of their time fulfilling this need by spending it in the growth zone. One of the skills that dancers learn very early on is how to be comfortably uncomfortable.

2.Create Momentum – A natural momentum occurs when you start to challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone. What can seem like small marginal gains start to add up, and the multiplying effect of the small gains in several areas creates a force and rhythm (HA! Dance pun) which becomes self-perpetuating. It just cannot be stopped. You won’t want to stop – you see the benefits, the change, the improvements, the difference, so you keep growing and growing. And by default, your comfort zone extends too.

3.Become a Productivity Ninja – With increased levels of focus, self-confidence and belief, you make stuff happen. Doing things you never thought possible and achieving goals that were once just dreams. Whether it’s feeling really comfortable with a new dance step, confidently asking someone to dance, or participating in a big dance event, the upward spiral of achievement and confidence can become a potent asset for anyone.

4.Eliminate Fear – Your mind can work for you or against you. You have control over how you think, but you cannot leave it to chance. If you don’t proactively program your mind to work for you, then by default, it will subconsciously start to work against you by trying to protect you from the unknown, the new, the different, that first dance lesson.

That little voice in your head will come up with a thousand reasons why you shouldn’t perform in the next in-studio spotlight. Why your new endeavour will fail, should be avoided, why it’s dangerous…the record plays on repeat. YOU are the only one who can silence it, push it aside, and step on the dance floor anyway.

5.Enter the Growth Zone – Through stretching and pushing the boundaries, testing new ideas, discovering what works and bottling it so you can replicate it at the next Friday night Practice Party, you will naturally step outside your comfort zone and operate in your growth zone. The zone where you can make stuff happen. The zone where you become more conscious and deliberate in your thinking, feelings, and actions, and movements. Entering your growth zone builds a habit of expanding your comfort zone, which equips you to handle change and ambiguity with more poise and resilience.

6.Greater Self-fulfillment – We have more control than you might think in regards to the depth of our lives. Growth, a new-found level of productivity, and shaping your performance zone all lead you to a pathway of self-fulfillment. A feeling of finding your groove (HA! Another one) in life as you achieve your full potential. In doing so, you’ll create a new source of contentment.

7.Profound Impact on Others – We all like to hang around people we admire, who challenge us to be the best version of ourselves. People we can learn from and, perhaps most importantly, who inspire us to cha cha cha out of our comfort zone.

When you spend time outside of your comfort zone, two extraordinary things happen. First, you become like a magnet. You attract people into your life who can help you fast-track and accelerate your journey towards attaining your goals. Second, you help others grow! Whether consciously or unconsciously, you become a role model, a mentor, or a coach to others. You become a flashing beacon for others to follow and aspire to, making a positive impact on their lives.

Remember, you are capable of so much more than you may believe.

Your goals, aspirations, and dreams are waiting for you. As you step out to harness them you will hear that little voice trying to pull you off the dance floor. Gently remind yourself that there is no such thing as “failing” if you get something out of it. FAIL is actually an acronym! ‘First Attempt In Learning”. Remember that before your next dance lesson!
